What are YaKBar's, and how are they made?

YaKBar's are made from just four natural ingredients: Yak and Cows's milk, lime juice and salt.

Lime juice and salt are added to Yak milk dog chews during the production process to aid in the coagulation of the milk proteins. The acidic lime juice helps to denature the milk proteins, causing them to clump together and form solid curds, while the salt helps to further separate the curds from the liquid whey.

This coagulation process is essential in the production of YaKBar© dog chews, as it helps to form a solid and chewy texture that is safe for dogs to consume. Without this process, the milk would remain in a liquid state and would not be suitable for making chews. Additionally, the addition of lime juice and salt can enhance the flavor and nutritional value of the chews, making them more appealing to dogs.

The chews are then smoked and dried on racks, a process which takes around four weeks, during which time the chews are moved up the smoking racks each week to reduce their exposure.

This can result in slight variations in color between batches, with darker hues indicating more smoke exposure. However, the difference in color should not be significant, and all YaKBar's are made with the same high-quality ingredients and traditional techniques.

I've noticed that some of my YaKBar's are different in colour and size to others?

It's important to note that as with any hand-made product, each one is different in both size and colour.

The chews are cut by hand and can range slightly in weight. Similarly, because of the smoking process which helps to preserve the YaKBar©, you will notice the colour varies from chew to chew.

My YaKBar's sometimes appear to have dimples or "dots" on the side of them, why is this?

During the production process, the YaKBar© cheese is compressed in to blocks and wrapped in jute cloth.

The dimpes or dots which you see on the sides of some of the products are a result of our production process.

What is the best way to store my YaKBar©?

To ensure optimal quality and freshness, it is recommended to store your YaKBar's in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. Please be sure to check the Best Before date listed on the product label before giving the product to your dog.

It is important to not give your dog a product that is past its expiration date.

What size YaKBar© should I choose for my dog?

What should I do with the end pieces when the YaKBar© gets too small?

When the chew is getting to a point where you feel it is too small for your dog, simply microwave the chew for 30-50 seconds.

This will result in the chew "puffing up" to around double it's original size. This can be enjoyed as a crunchy treat for your dog once you have allowed it to fully cool down.
